Landscaping Claremont, Cottesloe and the Western Suburbs

Landscaping Claremont and its neighbours means shallow sandy soils over limestone, four councils with different verge rules, and established gardens on older streets. We are a family-owned landscaping and garden maintenance company based in Maida Vale, and we have served Perth since 2009.

How far we travel to the western suburbs

Rome2Rio shows car routes of 27.8 to 33.2 km from our Maida Vale base: Nedlands 29 minutes, Floreat 27 minutes, Claremont and Mount Claremont 30 minutes, Cottesloe 35 minutes. Check Google Maps for your start time.

Which council, which verge rules

  • Claremont is in the Town of Claremont. Its 2019 verge guideline bars artificial turf and caps plants at 500 mm.
  • Cottesloe is in the Town of Cottesloe. Work in the road reserve needs approval, with applications at least 10 working days before work starts. Its Residential Verges Policy, dated 2012, generally caps plants at 600 mm, so confirm with the Town that it is still current.
  • Nedlands and Mount Claremont are in the City of Nedlands, and part of Mount Claremont is in the Town of Cambridge. No permit is needed for lawns, reticulation or native gardens under 600 mm. Other works need an application.
  • Floreat and City Beach are in the Town of Cambridge, not the City of Stirling. Landscaping needs approval before work starts. Artificial grass, gravel mulch and plants taller than 750 mm are not permitted.

Shallow limestone soils on the coastal side

The Spearwood dune system sits under Cottesloe and Claremont: a limestone core with yellow sand on top. The DBCA report describes these soils as shallow, coarse, well-drained and calcareous. Closer to the coast the sands are pale and barely developed, and further east deeper Karrakatta sands take over.

On a job, that means alkaline, low-nutrient sand that drains fast, so plants need feeding and mulch. Limestone close under the surface also makes digging and footings harder.

Block types and heritage streets

Cottesloe’s local planning scheme codes most of the town R20, with R30 mostly in the south. The Town of Cottesloe Local Heritage Survey rates several streetscapes from the 1910s and 1920s.

Our work in the western suburbs

A Claremont client had us advise on a home garden and a Cottesloe commercial property. A Floreat client praised the landscaping of a new house, and another had a staged redesign with ongoing maintenance. A City Beach client thanked the crew for short-notice work, and two Nedlands clients had a crew job and a garden tidy before a home open.
