Soil rejuvenation for Perth sand
Perth’s sandy soil drains quickly and holds little water or nutrients on its own. Water Corporation says soil health matters especially in Perth’s sandy conditions. When planting, it advises mixing clay and organic compost into the top layer. On established lawns, a similar mix can go on as a top dressing so it works down to the roots over time.
Sand can also turn water repellent. Water Corporation suggests that if water sits on top of the soil instead of soaking in, it may be water repellent. Perth NRM advises a liquid wetting agent so water reaches the roots rather than sitting on the surface. Follow the product label for rate and timing.
Mulch holds the moisture in. Water Corporation advises a chunky mulch spread about 10 centimetres deep for the best results.
