Synthetic Turf Perth: Where It Suits, Heat and Base Prep

Synthetic turf can suit a Perth yard where real grass struggles: deep shade, a dog run that wears to dirt, or a small courtyard. It is not right everywhere, because Perth summers are hot and a synthetic lawn gets much hotter than grass. Synthetic turf is one of the services we offer.

Synthetic turf Perth: where it suits

  • Shade. Grass will not grow under shady trees because it needs sun, so a synthetic lawn is often the practical choice for those spots (UWA).
  • Pet areas and dog runs. A free-draining base and a pet-specific infill help manage odour, though the claims need checking (see below).
  • Small courtyards and side returns. Where mowing is awkward and there is no room for a lawn mower to turn, a synthetic surface can be simpler to keep.
  • Verges, only where your council allows it. Rules vary. The City of Cockburn requires approval where more than 25 per cent of a verge is paved, and it does not support synthetic grass across a whole verge. Check your council’s current verge policy before you install anything.

What to plan for: heat and water

Perth averages about 26.4 days a year at or above 35°C, based on 1994 to 2022 data, and CSIRO-BoM projections cited by the Australia Institute put that at up to 55 days a year by 2090 under high emissions. In a Melbourne study reported by The Conversation, artificial turf reached 72°C on a hot sunny day, enough to cause skin burns in ten seconds. Real turf in the same study never went above 39°C. The City of Cockburn also says synthetic grass can reach up to 100 degrees on a hot day and adds to the urban heat island effect.

Plan for this before you install. Position and shade both change how hot the surface gets, so work them into the layout before the base goes in.

Turf Australia, the natural turf industry body, argues that synthetic turf carries environmental and health risks. That is an advocacy position, not an independent test.

Base preparation on Perth sand

A synthetic lawn lasts when its base is right. An installer guide describes excavating about 100 to 120 millimetres, laying about 80 millimetres of compacted crushed rock or road base, and topping it with about 20 millimetres of crusher dust or paving sand, compacted again before the turf goes on. A geotextile weed membrane sits under the rock so weeds cannot push up through the system.

Perth’s soil is mostly sandy. Sand drains well, but the same guide notes it can shift if it is not properly contained, which is why the compacted base matters. Ask your installer for the base depth, the drainage detail and the manufacturer’s specification in writing before work starts.

Pets and infill

Urine is the main source of odour in pet areas. A free-draining base lets liquid pass through rather than pool, which is why drainage matters as much as the turf. Pet-specific infills are marketed as breaking down ammonia, but these are manufacturer claims, so ask any supplier for independent test data.

Routine care keeps a pet area fresh. Retailer guidance is to hose the high-use areas, rinse thoroughly after hot or dry spells, and brush the fibres now and then so they stay upright.

Synthetic or real lawn: the honest comparison

Synthetic turf needs no mowing, fertilising or watering to stay green, and it works in shade where grass fails. Against that, it gets hot in summer, its base and infill need upkeep, council rules can limit it on verges, and it cannot be aerated or fed. A real lawn needs sun, mowing, feeding, aeration and water, but it stayed far cooler underfoot in the Melbourne study. If your yard gets plenty of sun, a real lawn is the better fit, and we can help with lawn and turf installation in Perth and lawn mowing and lawn care in Perth. If shade, pets or a tight courtyard are the problem, synthetic turf may be the better answer. If you are planning the whole yard, see our garden design in Perth service.

Frequently asked questions

Is artificial grass good for dogs in Perth?

It can be, with a free-draining base and a pet-specific infill, but it needs routine rinsing and occasional upkeep to stay fresh. Ask for the drainage detail and the infill type in writing. Odour claims from suppliers are product claims, so ask for independent test results.

Does synthetic turf get too hot in Perth?

It can. A Melbourne study reported by The Conversation measured artificial turf at 72°C on a hot sunny day, against a real-turf maximum of 39°C. Perth averages about 26.4 days a year at or above 35°C, so plan the position and shade first.

How much does synthetic turf cost in Perth?

Cost depends on the area, the base preparation and the turf you choose. Every job is quoted on site; call us and we will give you a price for your yard. We provide a free comprehensive quote.

Can I put synthetic turf on my verge?

Only if your council allows it. The City of Cockburn requires approval where more than 25 per cent of a verge is paved, and it does not support synthetic grass across a whole verge. Rules differ between councils, so check your local policy before you buy.

Does synthetic turf save water?

Synthetic turf does not need the watering a real lawn needs to stay green, though pet areas still get rinsed. The City of Cockburn says synthetic grass can increase water wastage and run-off, which is a concern on verges.
