Artificial grass for dogs Perth: pet-friendly turf vs real lawn

Artificial grass for dogs Perth owners are considering can work, but it is not the easy answer that the marketing suggests. Heat, odour, drainage and cost all matter, and the sources disagree on some of them. This post sets out the honest trade-offs, the Perth heat figures from the Bureau of Meteorology and Weatherzone, what dog owners report, what a 50 square metre backyard cost in 2023, and how the choice compares with a real lawn. Where a figure is a vendor claim, an estimate or a 2023 price, we say so.

The honest pros and cons

Vendors and guides claim several benefits: no mud brought indoors after rain, no fertiliser or pesticide to store, and a surface that holds up to heavy play. We did not verify those claims independently.

The downsides are the ones that matter most in Perth. The surface can get very hot in full sun, dog urine can leave an odour, drainage has to be right or contaminants can run off, and the upfront cost is much higher than a DIY lawn. Choice’s view is that artificial turf is not automatically suitable for dogs, and that the buyer should check the drainage and durability of the turf.

Perth heat: the figures that matter

Perth’s summers are hot on average, and the hottest days are the ones that matter for a dog. The Bureau of Meteorology’s long-run record at Perth Airport (station 009021) gives mean maximum temperatures of 31.9 degrees in January, 32.1 degrees in February and 29.3 degrees in December, averaged over 82 years from 1944 to 2026. Those are averages, not the hot days.

The hot days are where the trouble starts. In the 2021 to 2022 summer, Perth had 30 days at or above 35 degrees by 20 February 2022, against the previous record of 31 days in the 1977 to 1978 summer, according to Weatherzone.

Choice reports, citing Dr Sebastian Pfautsch of the University of Western Sydney, that unshaded turf can reach up to 100 degrees Celsius on a hot day, and that a few seconds of contact can be enough to burn skin. It also says unshaded turf raises the air temperature around it. Choice reports a Perth owner whose turf warmed during a heatwave of more than 40 degrees that lasted over a week, but stayed walkable. Her previous turf could not be walked on in similar heat, and she installed the new product in 2018 with heat resistance in mind.

Shade and cooler infill are the practical answers. Check how hot the surface is in the afternoon, not just in the morning, before the dog goes on it.

Infill, drainage and odour

Choice reports that a pet infill is designed to absorb urine and reduce the ammonia smell, and that most pet infills also cool the surface. Some cooling infills use evaporative cooling. Cooler yarns use infrared-reflective pigments to absorb less heat. One product claims to cut surface temperature by 30 per cent, and by up to 28 degrees. That is the manufacturer’s claim, and we have not checked it.

Drainage matters for the environment as well as the dog. Choice warns that poor drainage can carry contaminants from the turf into waterways, so ask for the drainage rate and the base design before you buy. Remove animal waste promptly, hose the area down, and use a specialty cleaner for deep cleaning.

Owners report different results. A Perth owner told Choice that her turf stayed odour-free with a monthly deep clean. A Sutherland Shire owner of two small dogs said the urine smell stayed strong despite weekly cleaning, got worse in hot weather, and that runny dog faeces were hard to clean off, so she would not recommend it to dog owners. Choice does not say whether infill or cleaning products are toxic to dogs. Ask the installer for that in writing.

Cost in Perth: a 50 square metre backyard

Choice’s worked example is a 50 square metre backyard, priced in an article updated on 25 September 2023. Those are 2023 figures. Treat them as a guide for planning, not a quote.

Choice says professional installation costs about twice the DIY price. Its figure for an installer’s labour is about 55 to 60 dollars per square metre, which puts the installed price at roughly 75 to 130 dollars per square metre with turf. Choice advises professional installation for a whole backyard, because a DIY mistake in the base, the fitting or the infill can leave turf that shifts or drains badly.

Real lawn: what it needs instead

A real lawn has its own costs, and they are in water and upkeep. Water Corporation’s low-maintenance advice for lawns is to check the irrigation for even coverage, apply a wetting agent with a soil moisture retainer on its set dates, and aerate in spring. It also notes that Perth households use more than half their total water on gardens, which is the context for any lawn decision. Frequently asked questions

Is artificial grass safe for dogs?

It can be, if the turf has good drainage and durability and the infill and cleaners suit pets. Choice says it is not automatically suitable, and it does not say whether the infill or cleaning products are toxic to dogs. Ask the installer for that in writing before you buy.

Does artificial grass get too hot in Perth?

Yes, on hot days. Perth Airport’s mean maximum is about 32 degrees in February, but the 2021 to 2022 summer had 30 days at or above 35 degrees by 20 February. Unshaded turf can run much hotter than the air, so test it and provide shade.

How much does artificial grass cost for a backyard in Perth?

Choice’s 2023 example for 50 square metres is 3,750 to 6,500 dollars installed by a professional, or 1,600 to 4,500 dollars DIY. Get a current written quote, because those figures are from 2023.

Does artificial grass smell with dog urine?

It can. Choice reports that some owners find the odour stays, even with weekly cleaning. Pet infill and regular deep cleaning help, and one Perth owner kept the odour away with a monthly deep clean. A second owner found the smell stayed strong despite weekly cleaning, so ask other owners with a similar dog before you commit.

How long does artificial grass last?

Choice says a well-maintained, high-quality installation can last up to 25 years, but standard warranties cover about 7 to 10 years. Plan for major maintenance or replacement around the end of the warranty.
